DejaVu fonts are based on the Vera Fonts. The goal is to maintain a degree of fidelity to the original style of the font, and in order to accommodate a greater set of characters than what the original designer would have included (for example, the entire Latin, Greek, and Cyrillic ranges) the font undergoes the practice of collaborative development.
